Remarkify vs Read on reMarkable vs rePub

How Remarkify, Read on reMarkable and rePub differ: handwritten pen strokes versus an ePub or notebook, images, settings and where each one runs.

Remarkify, Read on reMarkable and rePub all get a web article onto a reMarkable. They differ in what lands on the tablet: Remarkify sends handwritten pen strokes, the other two send an ePub to read (Read on reMarkable can also create a notebook). This page lays out the differences without scoring them, because which one fits depends on what you want to do with the text.

Strokes versus a document

An ePub is a file you read, and you can annotate on top of it. Remarkify converts the text into the same kind of pen strokes your own handwriting is made of, so it behaves like something you wrote: you can erase a word, move a paragraph, highlight it and write between the lines. The handwriting feature goes one step further and writes in a font built from your own hand.

The trade-off is that strokes are laid out when you send, for your tablet's screen. They do not reflow when you change a font size on the device the way an ePub does. Each send also uses one conversion once your free ones are used up.

Which one fits

  • You want to read an article like a book and adjust the text on the tablet: an ePub-based option such as Read on reMarkable's EPUB setting or rePub is built for that.
  • You want to work with the text, annotating, rearranging or keeping it among your own notes: that is what Remarkify is for.
  • You want an open-source ePub generator: rePub is published on GitHub.
